Royal Lakeside Golf Club
Royal Lakeside Golf Club Details
18 holes par 72 (6815 yards)
The Royal Lakeside Golf Club was originally opened in 1993 with renovations taking place in 2011. The course is situated at the mouth of the Bangpakong River. It is surrounded by a lot of natural features such as numerous flowers and shrubs which make up its striking surroundings. A number of holes on the course run along the wide lagoon that is around the course while others require players to hit right across the Bangpakong river. The lagoon has dual purposes. Apart from serving the golf course, it also protects the villas located on its opposite bank from errant shots.
Because of its proximity to the river, players are assured of cool breezes the whole day. The beautiful natural environment further enhances ones golfing experience. One of the features that make this course stand out from the rest is the private marina which is used by yachts docking here. The Yacht Club provides an alternative entrance to the golf course for members only. This makes it possible for members to access the course from Bangkok or Pattaya by boat.
In 2011, new greens were constructed which are undulated and roll fast and true. These use the most recent ultra-dwarf Bermuda turf. The fairways have Zoysia grass and are always well kept. This is not true for the waste areas and bunkers which are somewhat neglected. The course gets strong winds from the sea, which gives an added touch to the game, a phenomenon that is not experienced as often in Bangkok.
Players will enjoy the fairways that are wide enough and finding balls has become easier due to the light semi-rough fairways. These features bring with them a Royal Lakeside feel. Approach shots are quite tricky because of the earth mounding on the borders of the fairways and greens. Apart from the earth mounding, the rest of the golf course is relatively flat. The course resembles a garden with its variety of trees like eucalyptus and palms, a few streams, flowers and shrubs. Players need to be aware of a few hazards while in their play. The biggest hazard is the vast waste bunkers around the fairways particularly the shorter par-3s which are well bunkered. While managing the course, players also need to keep in mind the water hazards. Water hazards include small creeks which crisscross a few of the fairways and the lagoon which is on the border of the course.
The entrance to the marina of the Royal Lakeside club is to be found by a small lighthouse near the 9th tee. For a breathtaking view of the dome-topped clubhouse can be seen from the par-4 5th. This clubhouse, with its yellow dome greatly resembles the White House in Washington DC.
Golfers are granted access to luxurious showers and lockers. They also have the opportunity to dine on either Thai or Japanese cuisines from the respective restaurants. The service at the Royal Lakeside is relatively good but players must contend with locals who speak little English. This limits the level of conversation that players can have with them. Many of the visitors to the Royal Lakeside over the weekends are Japanese golfers. The course ensures that players have a good time golfing particularly with its low green fees.
