Pinehurst Golf & Country Club
Pinehurst Golf & Country Club Details
27 holes par 72/36 (6855 yards)
The 1992 Johnnie Walker Classic and the 1994 Thailand Open were hosted at the Pinehurst Golf Club which is found in Bangkok. This club, whose design takes after its namesake golf club, used to be very popular in Thailand and golfers visiting the country ensured that they visited the Pinehurst Golf Club. With the passing years, the club’s quality has deteriorated although the club still is a good challenge for high handicappers.
Some of the benefits of the club are its proximity to the Don Muang airport in Bangkok, 15 minutes north to reach the golf course. The course is also only 45 minutes from central Bangkok, and offers mid to high handicappers a chance to play a simpler game and enjoy the flat greens and broad fairways.
The entire course is made up of three nine-hole courses i.e. the North Lake, the West Forest and the South Greenfield nines. The North Lake nine resembles golf courses found in the USA. The South Greenfield course is very flat and smooth. The West Forest nine poses the biggest challenge of all 3 nines because of the fairways which have mounds and water hazards surrounding them.
The par-3 8th on the West Forest nine brags to having the largest putting greens in Asia. It is surrounded by water and has a two-tier driving option. When teeing from this hole, regulars tee from ground level and those who hit long shots as well as professional golfers tee from a raised tee box. The tee boxes have been structured in such a way that the upper tee is suspended on top of the lower tee with concrete columns, providing some sort of ceiling above the lower tee.
Visitors at Pinehurst can hire one of the VIP golf carts which have the Rolls Royce brand on them. Flood lights light up the course at night popularizing the club with expatriates and locals alike. The caddies who work night shifts also appeal to visitors as they are university students doing part-time work. They give their “bosses” good company along the course.
Other amenities that are available at the club include the clubhouse, golf lodge and a number of restaurants. The clubhouse offers a good view of the course. The main restaurant has excellent Korean and Japanese dishes on its menu.
Despite the lack of a challenge, Pinehurst will surely satisfy higher handicappers. Because of the large number of visitors, play on the 18-hole course can last 6 hours.
